What is the best running/walking shoes for overweight individual?

There's no way around it: I'm overweight.. quite a bit overweight, and I need to start exercising. The best and easiest way for me to do that is walking, and that constitutes needing new shoes.

I did some research a couple years ago when I bought the New Balance shoes I have now and found that running shoes would be the way to go. So, I'm looking for running shoes that offer the most cushioning (because of my weight and issues I have had with shin splints and sore feet) and.. well, whatever else is important, I suppose. Not real particular about brand, but I do know that I had a ton of foot and leg problems previous to my last pair of shoes (New Balance, but to be fair up until then I wore mostly flip flops and an occasional basketball shoe)..

I ran through the Shoe Dog at roadrunnersports.com and found that I most likely have a medium arch and straight mechanics.

Thank you all for your input.

cross trainers are nice and light weight. they have arch and heel support. there are nice pairs from nike, but don't go with anything like shocks or anything with a huge heel..chances are that you will roll on your ankle and twist your foot. Also, you want a light shoe to run with because if your shoes are heavy or bulky it will be harder to run and you'll get tired even quicker just from dragging your feet with the big heels, so choose carefully but yeah nike and asics are good brands for that sort.
Reply:look around for different shoes.....just dont get nike. they arent really good for your feet, even though everyone wears them. the best way to go is ASICS! they are the best. they fit my feet best, and i havent had any problems with them.
Reply:nike shox
Reply:New Balance offers a variety of widths in their shoes that might be more comfortable if your feet are fat.
Reply:asics are the best i have run with them for a while and most of my track team and coach wears them wears them

"nike shox are bad for running even though they look cool"(my track coach)
