Blood blister 2 weeks before the marathon. Any advise?

Just came back from my last long run 20 mile and discovered I have a blood blister - quater size on my foot. How do I make sure it heals in 2 weeks? Do I need to get a new shoe? It is probably too late to experement with shoes at this point...

Could I continue running this week?

If it was me, I would sterilize a knife, cut it and drain it. Then I'd bandage it. I've done this in the past and it worked OK for me.

No, don't get new shoes, just put a band-aid over that same spot on marathon morning and it should give no problem.

You should be tapering your miles for these two weeks, so keep running, just less this week and even less next week.
Reply:In one of my marathons I could feel one of those growing, then it got sore in a different way, then it got all wet and I bled through the sock. So I've been there.

I would never use a knife on myself, however I would use a small pin sterilized with alcohol to lance it at the base. Push it towards the middle of the blister, but also push away from your skin so that you do not go into the derma layer. What I mean is that you aim the needle in such a way as to make sure that if it did go in too far, it would poke out through the top of the blister and not into your base layer of skin.

Have a paper towel ready because it will ooze out bloody stuff; give it a good wash, again with alcohol and let it dry clean. Cover it for a while, but periodically take the bandage off and let it stay dry. Do not pull off the skin. Also you want to watch it to make sure it does not get infected; any sign of that you can go right to the doctor and get some anti-biotics for them, they work really well (I have never had that happen due to lancing a blister).

It should turn into a callous in a few days; keep it protected by adding a ring of moleskin around it. Also, buy some double-layer socks from a running store; they stop blister formation. You might also want to try some different shoes that fit better. If my favorite goes out of production I sometimes have to try on ten pairs of shoes to get the right fit. I really don't like trying on shoes, but hey, it's equipment.
Reply:i would give you advice i me never heard of that term, sorry
